  • Holds first Atlanta History and Preservation Course in the Academy of Medicine 

1982

  • Begins Fox Theater walking tour 
  • Celebrates adaptive use and development of Lanier Hotel and Training Center
  • Assists in changing zoning codes to allow mixed commercial and residential use and make loft projects like Castleberry Hill possible

1983

  • Sponsors tour of Willis F. Denny buildings
  • Sponsors Oakland Cemetery Photographic Exhibit
  • Wins AUDC Award of Excellence for increasing public awareness of historic preservation in Atlanta
  • Forms CIRCA for preservationists 20 to 40

1984

  • Forms Easements Atlanta with AUDC and Atlanta History Center
  • Works for West Paces Ferry historic zoning and billboard ordinance 
  • Works to stop Pershing Point apartments’ demolition, Seaboard Railroad rail/truck terminal in Cabbagetown and Presidential Parkway 
  • Celebrates preservation of Baltimore Block

1985

  • Assists in formation of Capitol Commission to protect State Capitol
  • Celebrates adaptive use of only remaining warehouse district with Castleberry Jazz
  • Assists in formation of Atlanta Tax Task Force to evaluate effect of the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act Rehabilitation Tax Credits 

1986

  • Publishes Preservation Resource Guide
  • Celebrates adaptive use of Ford Motor Co. building with Tin Lizzie Tizzy
  • Assists in obtaining grant from National Trust for Historic Preservation to the City of Atlanta for development of a comprehensive historic preservation plan

1987

  • Reactivates Preservation Center Council 
  • Celebrates Atlanta’s 150th birthday with a series of talks on Atlanta’s development

1988

  • Mayor signs Comprehensive Preservation Program, which APC was instrumental in developing 
  • Celebrates preservation of The Castle with Saints and Sinners Ball 
  • Preservation Council sponsors neighborhood workshop on the benefits of early historic designation

1989

  • Assists in first public hearing for Comprehensive Preservation Program
  • Receives state grant to develop heritage education program for Atlanta City Schools on the Inman Park historic district 
  • Assists in surveying 600 structures in Vine City 

1990

  • Celebrates preservation of Baltimore Row with Saints and Sinners Ball
  • Begins Sweet Auburn walking tour
  • Works for City Council approval of tax abatement for income producing properties that are designated historic properties
  • Receives funding from National Park Service for “Raising Preservation Awareness in Atlanta’s Black Communities” 
  • Sponsors Druid Hills home tour

1991

  • Facilitates historic designations for West End, C&S Bank (now Bank of America) and Palmer/Phelan Apt.
  • Joins with STOP to preserve Piedmont Park and neighborhoods around the city to promote the subdivision ordinance
  • Supports city in passage of new parking lot ordinance
  • Recognizes preservation of the Healey Building with Saints and Sinners Ball
  • Wins “Outstanding Nonprofit Management” award from Metropolitan Atlanta Community Foundation
  • Begins Walking Miss Daisy’s Druid Hills” walking tour
  • Receives second state grant for follow-up project to “Raising Preservation Awareness in Atlanta’s Black Community”

1992

  • Joins with neighborhoods and school groups to oppose location of proposed combined sewer overflow in Piedmont Park
  • Supports neighborhood in opposing special use permit for Robert Dunn House
  • Sponsors Virginia-Highland home tour
  • Receives grant with Atlanta Bureau of Cultural Affairs to produce an inventory of outdoor sculpture, "Save our Sculpture" (SOS)

1993

  • Offers “Sweet Auburn, A Street of Dreams” as classroom program
  • Begins Ansley Park tour
  • Begins The Bottom Line Workshop

1994

  • Honors preservation of Georgian Terrace with Off-Peachtree Revue 
  • Offers "Stories Worth Sharing – the Heritage of Atlanta’s African-American Neighborhoods" as a classroom program
  • Works for sale of Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill to Winter Properties
  • Sponsors Peachtree Heights home tour

1995

  • Celebrates GI Jive at Georgian Terrace
  • Endorses Downtown Improvement District proposed by Central Atlanta Progress
  • SOS receives Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation Award
  • Works to save Olympia Building

  • Begins Live in a Landmark Workshop

  • Celebrates Downtown Atlanta’s future with “Rooftop Rendezvous” at Chamber of Commerce Building
  • Sponsors Peachtree Battle Avenue home tour
  • Works with AUDC, Georgia Trust, Peachtree Heights West neighborhood and developer Blaine Kelley and Urban Group to preserve the Randolph-Lucas House

1998 

  • Celebrates adaptive use of Fulton Bag & Cotton Mill with “The Bootlegger’s Ball"
  • Works to prevent Georgia State University from tearing down a downtown block in Fairlie-Poplar Historic District for a classroom building

1999

  • Moves headquarters to 1900 Rufus Rose House on Peachtree Street
  • Develops List of Five Worst Losses – Terminal Station, Equitable Building, Kimball House, Pershing Point Apartments, Peachtree Arcade; Best Saves – Fox Theater, The Biltmore, Druid Hillls, The Castle, Shrine of Immaculate Conception; and Most Endangered – Block bounded by Peachtree, Mitchell, Broad and MLK Drive; Peachtree Garden Club; Prior Tire; Police Station and Jail; Kell Hall and Sparks Hall at GSU; Oxford Books on Pharr Road.
  • Celebrates opening of the restored Biltmore Ballrooms with The Biltmore Diamond Jubilee
  • Sponsors Peachtree Battle Avenue home tour Part II.

2000

  • Works with The Georgia Trust and the National Trust to save the Peters House from being sold for a 164-unit condominium complex 
  • Celebrates 20th anniversary at the Big Show & Dance at Studioplex

2001

  • Develops Most Endangered Historic Places list with 22 sites
  • Honors firemen of Fire Station #15, Battalion 3/C for saving the Peters House on Nov. 9, 2000
  • Sponsors Atlanta Classics: a tour of Philip Shutze and Neel Reid houses
  • Celebrates 21st anniversary at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center with Gospel Brunch
  • Sponsors tour of James Means houses
  • Celebrates the 100th birthday of the Rose House with a Victorian Tea
  • Saves the Grant Mansion (1857) by purchasing it for $110,000 
  • Provides grant for City Comprehensive Historic Resources Survey

2002

  • Assists West Paces Ferry Road group, Save our Street, in defeating Pace Academy’s effort to install a soccer field/track on non-contiguous property
  • Assists Historic Brookhaven Foundation in rallying the neighborhood to support local historic designation; designation loses by 11 votes
  • Moves offices to the Grant Mansion
  • Begins Grant Park Guided Walking Tour
  • Assists DAR in raising funds to restore its headquarters, 1911 Craigie House
  • Works with the General Services Administration on the adaptive use of three historic buildings in the Fairlie-Poplar Historic District for the expansion of the Federal Court of Appeals Building 
  • Provides grant for City Comprehensive Historic Resources Survey
  • Celebrates 22nd anniversary with first Preservation Exposition at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center

  • Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of Saving the Fox with the Save the Fox Silver Anniversary Gala
  • Presents The Phoenix Flies: A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks with 14 Preservation Partners, Atlanta’s first preservation festival
  • Sponsors tour of historic and infill houses, Good Neighbors Primer: Restorations, Additions and Infill
  • Develops 2003 Most Endangered Historic Places list with 14 new sites
  • Assists in organizing East/West steering committee to study Buckhead traffic in the historic neighborhood
  • Works to save Paschal’s Restaurant from demolition by Clark Atlanta University for dormitories
  • Assists the Infill Task Force to moderate infill housing in the city
  • Produces Preservation Exposition 2003 at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
  • Works to save Piedmont Crest Apartments in Midtown

2004

  • Works to expand Midtown Historic District
  • Works with neighbors for local historic designation for Peachtree Heights
  • Presents the Second Annual Phoenix Flies: A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks with 18 Preservation Partners and 50 activities
  • Develops pilot program on Atlanta history and preservation for 8th graders with Paideia School.
  • Works to protect historic structures on Auburn Avenue threatened Big Bethel AME Church’s project
  • Wins 2004 Preservation Service Award for The Phoenix Flies from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation
  • Wins 2004 Award of Excellence for The Phoenix Flies from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission
  • Executive Director Boyd Coons receives Jenny D. Thurston Memorial Award for Outstanding Preservation Professional from the Atlanta Urban Design Commission
  • Holds first Camp Preservation for 9-12 year olds with Georgia Trust
  • Co-sponsors Camp Preservation for ages 9-12 with Georgia Trust
  • Coordinates installation of two Battle of Atlanta markers in Inman Park for 140th anniversary of the battle
  • Starts twilight tours of Ansley Park, Inman Park and Druid Hills
  • Leads fight to save Peters House from development with 142 condominiums
  • Sponsors Live in a Landmark workshop with Georgia Institute of Real Estate

2005

  • Works on donation of Peters House to Savannah College of Arts and Design by owner and approval of condo development on surrounding property by AUDC
  • Presents Third Annual Phoenix Flies: A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks with 19 Preservation Partners and more than 50 activities
  • Supports Beltline, 22-mile loop project that includes parks, bike trails and transportation
  • Begins rehabilitation of the 1856 Grant Mansion
  • Develops 2005 Most Endangered Historic Places List with 17 new sites
  • Works with seven Grant Park area historic sites and attractions to promote the area and secure inclusion in proposed tourist bus/trolley lines
  • Supports legislation to control infill developed in response to City Council Member Mary Norwood’s Infill Housing Task Force
  • Works to save Withers House in Oakland City and Ivy-Hammond House in Midtown
  • Presents Buckhead: Landscapes Homes and Memories with lectures on Buckhead and a home tour

2006

  • Presents Fourth Annual Phoenix Flies: A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks with 19 Preservation Partners and 56 events in 30 historic venues
  • Recommends guiding principles for BeltLine project
  • Works to prevent rezoning of historic Randolph-Lucas House to allow demolition
  • Reinstates Twilight Tour of Midtown Atlanta
  • Celebrates Silver Anniversary at Academy of Medicine
  • Assists Castleberry Hill in obtaining local designation as an historic district
  • Co-hosts Peters House Open House with the Savannah College of Art and Design before restoration begins (SCAD receives donation in March 2007)
  • Receives 1902 Carnegie capital as a gift
  • Sponsors Camp Preservation for ages 9-12 with St. Luke’s Episcopal Church

  • Presents Fifth Annual Phoenix Flies: A Citywide Celebration of Living Landmarks with 22 Preservation Partners with 65 events at 31 historic venues
  • Presents Buckhead in Bloom home and garden tour and lecture on Buckhead history
  • Develops 2007 Most Endangered Historic Places list with 13 sites
  • Partners with Margaret Mitchell House and Museum on summer camp, Mystery in the City, for ages 10-14
