APC encloses east and west wings at the Grant Mansion
With three building permits on view at the front door and the constant sounds of saws, nail guns and hammers, the Grant Mansion is under construction once again. After a hiatus in 2007 to make the repairs required for life safety and the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Atlanta Preservation Center is back on track to complete Phase I of the restoration of this historic house in 2008.

Although the repairs to the exterior walls of the east and west wings that were made in 2005-06 are not obvious, this stabilization work in Phase I was a necessary first step to protect the historic materials that remain in the house.
The next step is the current project, which includes covering these walls with the second-floor joists and a temporary roof system. At this time we are installing the first-floor joists and sub-flooring in the east and west wings. We are also repairing all of the gutters.
The APC contacted three contractors for estimates and selected Brunning and Stang to complete the $106,000 project. Through former Board President Nowland Gwynn, we were able to purchase from Carolina Lumber Company lumber for the project at the suppliers’ cost.

The APC is also pleased to announce that it will receive matching funds of $7,000 from the state for a Georgia Heritage Grant to begin restoration of the historic first-floor windows. This was one of 11 state grants for preservation of historic sites in 2008. Work will start once the temporary roof is in place.
The APC appreciates the support of foundations, board members, and friends who have made donations and pledges for these projects. It has approximately $39,400 left to raise to complete this phase.
In addition, this work has inspired the APC to look ahead to Phase II. It includes rebuilding the back porch, which will contain a handicapped lift so that the building will be accessible to all, and the front porch.
The APC is very grateful to Harrison Design Associates for drawing the plans for these porches pro bono. It has already contacted a local foundation about providing funding and has received a $10,000 pledge for the lift from a board member.
Come see our progress.
