First Annual "Summer Starts Here" on May 16-18 Eight Atlanta attractions offer special events, rates or gifts

With the Braves in town and the weather getting warmer there is no need to wait until June to explore the best cultural attractions in Atlanta. Atlanta Starts Here announces the first annual “Summer Starts Here” weekend with special tours, events and rates on May 16-18.

Atlanta Preservation Center is one of the eight attractions participating in this exciting weekend prelude to summer. The other seven destinations are Braves Museum & Hall of Fame/Turner Field Tours, Atlanta Cyclorama, Georgia Capitol Museum, Grant Park, Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site, Oakland Cemetery, and Zoo Atlanta.

All destinations are in close proximity to each other so plan your day to include some walking, biking, riding public transportation and eating at neighborhood restaurants. Offerings include (in alphabetical order):

  • Atlanta Preservation Center’s regular guided walking tour of the Grant Park Historic Neighborhood on Sun., May 18 at 10 a.m. is FREE. The tour includes the 1856 Grant Mansion, which is under restoration.

  • Braves Museum & Hall of Fame and Turner Field Tours is giving tour participants a FREE gift with a purchase of a tour ticket on Fri., May 16 and Sat., May 17; no tour on Sun., May 18; tours are offered from 9 am to 3 pm. Fee: Adults, $12; children, $7.

  • Cyclorama & Civil War Museum is offering special admission prices for its program and tours on May 16-18. Buy 1 ticket and get 1 ticket FREE of equal or lower value. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children 6-12.

  • Georgia Capitol Museum is offering a FREE Special Curator’s Tour of the State Capitol on Fri., May 16 from 3 to 5 p.m.

  • Grant Park Conservancy is presenting these special guided walking tours: History of Grant Park at 10:30 a.m. on Fri., May 16; Fort Walker at 11 a.m. on Sat., May 17; Glorious Water: Springs, Fountains, Lakes and Ponds of Grant Park at 1 p.m. on Sun., May 18; Go Native: Plants and Trees in G rant Park at 8:30 a.m. on Sun., May 18. Fee: Adults, $5; seniors, $3

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Historic Site is sponsoring a special FREE exhibition, “From Memphis to Atlanta: The Drum Major Returns Home,” an exhibition in remembrance of Dr. King’s assassination 40 years ago through Aug. 31.

  • Oakland Cemetery has not resumed its tours yet because of tornado damage.

  • Zoo Atlanta is offering a $3 discount on Fri., May 16 through Sat., May 18. Visitors must say “Atlanta Starts Here” or show a coupon for the discount. Fee: Adults,$17.99; children, $12.00
