Help protect the city’s historic neighborhoods and buildings by serving as an APC volunteer. You will meet fellow preservationists, learn more about Atlanta’s fascinating history, have opportunities to visit historic sites not usually open to the public
ATLANTA ADVOCATES

PALLADIANS
Walking tour guides
Our walking tour guides are professionally trained volunteers who are passionate
about preservation. Experts in the field of architecture, preservation, planning
and history lead our annual training classes. They begin in January with three
introductory classes followed by 4 to 6 additional classes specific to each
tour in February and March. Volunteers can choose from any of our eight walking
tours for training. Each guide gives one to two tours a month. If you would
like to become a tour guide, please call 404-688-3353.
Special
events volunteers
Volunteers are
key participants in our special events. We need about 70 volunteers as docents
in our annual tour of homes. Our special events docents do not give tours – just direct the flow of visitors through the home and answer basic questions. As a thank-you, we give you a free ticket to the home tour. We also need volunteers in planning
our parties marking successful preservation projects such as our ‘Save
the Fox’ Silver Anniversary Gala. For information on upcoming events,
please call 404-688-3353.
Education program volunteers
Volunteers are needed to assist with Heritage Education programs. These programs are taken to schools, libraries, and children/youth centers throughout the metro area. In addition, volunteers are needed for various activities during our week long annual Camp Preservation held in the summer. Volunteer training is provided. For more information, please call 404-688.3353 x13.
AWARDS, PARTIES AND TRIPS and ADDITIONAL EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
Each year the
APC gives award certificates to its top volunteers at our Annual Meeting
and Volunteer Appreciation Party, usually held at an historic site. The volunteer
guides for each tour also get together at the beginning of each tour season
to meet the new guides and share information they have learned over the year.
In 2004 APC guides traveled to Chicago to look at movie palaces, architecture,
and historic sites. Click here to read some of their
reports. Throughout the year there are numerous opportunities through
presentations and workshops to learn more about Atlanta’s history, techniques
for giving tours, and much more.
